“They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law. But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true” (Psalm 119:150-151, ESV).
The psalmist’s confidence in the face of his enemies is the presence of God, and the truth of His Word. Notice the way space plays in this passage: the wicked “draw near” to the psalmist, but their evil is underlined by how they are “far” from God’s law; yet even the nearness of those who are far from God is not cause for fear, because God is near to the psalmist, and the truth of His Word brings comfort.
If we take refuge in God, His nearness is a sure defense against any danger that comes to us. We steel ourselves in God’s Word, and His Word is true and trustworthy. God is the ultimate security, transcending all the chaos of this fallen world. Draw near to Him in Jesus Christ, and entrust everything to His fatherly care.
