“For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land” (Psalm 95:3-5, ESV).
The exaltation of Psalm 95 carries on into these verses declaring the supremacy of God. The comparative phrases should not be taken to imply that there really are any other gods, but to emphasize the greatness of the one true God against the supposed gods of the nations. God alone is the Maker and Master of this world, His creation. In a powerful image of His sovereignty and providential care, the psalmist describes the seas and heights as not only formed by the hand of God, but held in His power.
May the greatness of the Lord fill your heart with hope today. This is His world, and none of the troubles or trials or dangers we face are out of His hands, beyond His wisdom and might. Entrust yourself to His Fatherly care, and rejoice in the greatness of your heavenly King.
