Bless the Lord

“Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!” (Psalm 72:18-19, ESV). Psalm 72 is intriguing as a sustained prayer for God’s blessing upon the king. The beginning describes it as a prayer of Solomon, but the end declares it the last of the prayers of David; perhaps we are to understand it as a prayer given by David for God’s blessing upon his son? In any case, it runs through supplication for extensive divine gifts of success and authority, power and prosperity, and in the larger biblical context we may understand that it is the eternal King, Jesus Christ, who will truly receive these gifts of divine blessing. At the end, God is praised, the giver of all good gifts.

Bless the Lord God Almighty, who continually showers upon us His manifold mercies, who blesses His people in His boundless grace. Remember God’s love and blessing as you go through your day; lay all your burdens before Him, who is able to help and redeem in every situation. Make God your joy today.
