“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11, ESV).
That was the key news of the angel’s proclamation to the shepherds on that first Christmas. A child was born in Bethlehem—the city of David, that great king of Israel. But this child was greater than David. This child was the Savior, who would deliver His people from sin and death. This child was the Messiah, the Christ, God’s anointed. This child was the Lord, God become man to rescue and rule over His people, for their eternal blessedness with Him.
Celebrate the glory of Christ, this Christmas anniversary of His coming for our salvation. Like the shepherds, we hear the wondrous word: God has come to us for our deliverance. In Him, we can be forgiven and made whole, adopted as sons in the Son, and blessed with the gift of life eternal. Christmas is cosmic good news, the birth of Christ the Lord.
