“Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, ‘Do you love me?’ and he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’” (John 21:17, ESV).
Between His resurrection and His ascension, Jesus appeared at various times to various groups. One of the appearances was to a number of disciples when they were out fishing, and at that meeting Jesus thrice asked Peter if he loved Him, and each time told the disciple to care for the flock. This triple asking hurt Peter, but the Lord was restoring him, giving him the opportunity to replace each of his three denials of Christ with a statement of love. And thrice also Jesus gave the restored commission, that Peter was to care for Christ’s people. The risen Lord brings newness of hope and life to those who follow Him.
How wonderful is the gospel of new beginnings in Christ! We should thank God for making this way, that none of our fallings has to be final, that His grace is there for us if we will reach out to Him. The resurrection means we have a living Savior, and His able to give new life to those who turn to Him in repentance and faith.
