“Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. Great is your mercy, O LORD; give me life according to your rules” (Psalm 119:155-156, ESV).
The psalmist reflects that hope is caught up with God’s teaching. The wicked do not find salvation (note the continuing theme of distance from vv.150-151), because they do not follow God’s law. Yet it is not merely a legalistic teaching, for the emphasis lies upon God’s mercy, as He is the Redeemer who gives salvation according to His law.
Life is found in God. When we run after our own desires, we find them fruitless and failing. Turning to the world and away from the Word, every path leads away from hope. But God is gracious. Those who receive His revelation find the way of life, hope in the midst of darkness and salvation from sin and all its troubles.
