Great Is Our Lord
“Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The LORD lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground” (Psalm 147:5-6, ESV).
Psalm 147 is an enthusiastic summons to praise God for His majesty and mercies. The combined emphasis on the greatness of God and His goodness to His people is captured in verses 5-6. God’s strength and wisdom are unfathomable, and He is worthy of all praise because of who He is. And because God knows our hearts and is able to do all things, the wise humble themselves before Him. Those who turn to God can be confident in Him—and those who oppose Him are destined to fall.
We can take tremendous confidence and comfort from the absolute sovereignty of God. He is able to do all things—so there is nothing we need fear if we draw near to Him by faith in Christ. He knows all things—so neither our ways nor our troubles are hidden from Him. He sees the wicked, and will deal with them in His way and time. Our only concern is to follow God and rely on Him in all things.
