“But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay!” (Psalm 70:5, ESV). In this short psalm, David cries out to God for rescue from his enemies. Desperation, rather than confidence sets the tone; yet, even in desperation, there is a sense of assurance that God is able. David urges God to act quickly (v.1), to frustrate the intentions of his oppressors (vv.2-3). On the other side, he prays that those who trust God would have joy in Him (v.4). But the psalmist himself is in the place of waiting, and he longs to see God’s deliverance (v.5).
Let your burdens move you to reliance on God’s Almighty power. He is strong to save in every situation, mighty and merciful, compassionate upon the downcast and gracious to those who call on Him. Our trials can be instrumental, if we let them drive us to the throne of grace, to rest our confidence in He who is able to help, to save and redeem.
