He Thinks of Us
“O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him?” (Psalm 144:3, ESV).
David’s confidence in God’s delivering power which he declares so enthusiastically in this psalm is coupled with the humility of knowing how very small we are in comparison with the majestic greatness of God. It is one of the paradoxes of life that the deepest courage is rooted in a profound awareness of one’s own limitations—and the infinite strength of God Almighty.
When we have a proper sense of self and a proper sense of God, we can face the world with courage, peace, and joy. If we see ourselves as greater than we are, we will fall into vanity; if we only see our smallness but we miss the truth of God’s greatness and love, we may stumble into despair. But knowing that for all our weakness God is absolutely strong, and that He has loved us in Jesus Christ—that is the secret of hope.
