His Purpose

“The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands” (Psalm 138:8, ESV).

This short psalm of gratitude ends with a word of confident hope. David has gloried in God’s character and past deliverances (vv.1-6), and now he turns towards the future in reliance upon the Lord. Notice the mingled certainty and prayer; knowing that God is sovereign does not turn believers away from earnestly laying our needs before Him. On the contrary, trust in God’s supremacy should lead us to a life of fervent prayer, as we walk in faith.

Know that God will care for His people, and rely on His fatherly love. His purposes are sure, and they are for the good of all who trust in Him. When we fear that God doesn’t see, or that He has left us alone, that is just the time to draw near in prayer and faith and to reaffirm our hope in Him. God will triumph, His promises will come to pass, and He will bring His people safely home.
