“You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you” (Psalm 118:28, ESV).
This psalm ends along the path it has traced, in grateful praise to the Lord. The worshipper has come to the temple, and the people rejoice in the blessing of drawing near to God (vv.19-27). At the heart of true spirituality and true religion is a personal relationship with God—being able to say, ‘my God.’ The one true God has made Himself known, and calls a people to Himself.
This is the proclamation of the gospel, that lost men and women can draw near to God by faith in Jesus Christ. The Maker and Master of the cosmos has reached down to us with the gift of salvation. Those who receive the good news and turn to Christ can echo the praise of saints from long ago: “You are my God, and I will give thanks to you”.
