“Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart. I incline my heart to perform your statutes forever, to the end” (Psalm 119:111-112).
The psalmist takes of a long view in his relationship with God, and in the enduring significance of the law of the Lord. Forever he will hold to and treasure God’s word, which is the root of his felicity; forever he will follow God’s teaching, throughout his earthly sojourn—and perhaps, as the emphasis on ‘forever’ indicates, he has his eye on the eternity which God’s people enjoy with Him.
True religion is about an enduring relationship with the living God. God’s people have His Word, given to us, not as some lifeless legislation but as the relationship-building communication of the living God, who gives life by His Spirit to those who trust in His Son—life that begins now and continues forever. We are to treasure God’s Word, for it is a heritage of life and joy.
