On Level Ground
“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!” (Psalm 143:10, ESV).
Psalm 143 brings an energetic plea for God’s mercy and guidance. David calls out to God (v.1), both with an awareness of his sin (v.2) and danger from his enemies (vv.3-4). But hope comes from recalling the faithfulness of God (v.5) and turning to Him (vv.6-11), ending with confidence in deliverance (v.12). Verse 10 emphasizes the connection between salvation and devotion to God. The way of life is the way of righteousness, and we need God’s Spirit to give us life and to lead us in the way of life.
Why do we try to find the way on our own? In this world of darkness and deceit, we have the light of God’s Word, given to us and opened to us by the Holy Spirit. We need hearts that are eager for God’s teaching, devoted to walking in His way. He has made for us the way of salvation and life. Hope comes through trust and humility, when we seek God’s guidance through the dangers and temptations of this world.
