“Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us!” (Psalm 85:4, ESV). Psalm 85 combines praise and petition in a plea for God to once again show mercy to His people. It begins with reflection on God’s grace in the past (vv.1-3), before turning to seek God’s compassion in the present (vv.4-7). The last verses reflect confidence in the merciful provision of God, and the desire to walk upright before Him (vv.8-13). Verse 4, then, underscores the key feature of the psalm, seeking God’s mercy.
The Lord is gracious and merciful, forgiving and kind to those who call upon Him in faith. Lift up your soul to God, and rest in His compassion. In an unforgiving world, God offers hope and healing, revival and restoration. Here we may find the only and all-sufficient balm for our souls.
