Search Me, O God
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24, ESV).
Psalm 139 has rejoiced in different aspects of God’s presence and care. In verse 17, David marveled at God’s thoughts; now, at the end, He calls on God to sift his thoughts and purify his heart. We can deceive ourselves, but God knows all things, and He alone is able to transform our hearts and minds in a way that reflects His good design for us. So even in longing to follow God, God’s child relies on prayer.
How strange that we try to hide from God, when what we need is surrender to His purifying work. David has given us the prayer of faith and trust: “Search me, O God…lead me in the way everlasting!” May we seek the Lord’s sifting work, for whatever pain comes in the process, joy is the end. May we seek the Lord’s gracious leading, for He alone can bring us safely home.
