“But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise” (Psalm 79:13, ESV). This last verse of Psalm 79 ends the lament on a hopeful note. Having cried out at the destruction of God’s people (vv.1-7) and lifted up a prayer for the Lord’s deliverance (vv.8-12), the psalmist ends with assurance that God will indeed redeem His people, and they will praise Him. As in Psalm 78, the motif of God as the shepherd and His people as His flock of sheep, expresses the tenderness of His care for us.
Have hope in God’s unbounded compassion. Your shepherd cares for His sheep. He knows your burdens and sufferings, and an eternal and unshakable deliverance awaits all those who trust in Jesus Christ. Carry on in courage through your days, trusting in the Good Shepherd to see you through every peril.
