Splendor of Holiness

“Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!” (Psalm 96:9, ESV).

The theme of praise continues in this psalm, declaring God’s majesty and might (vv.7-8). Then, in verse 9, the hymn draws a particular connection between God’s glory and His holiness. The splendor of the Lord is luminously pure, and uniquely His own. The mention of God’s holiness draws attention to the utterly overwhelming nature of His majesty, to the appropriateness of the call to “tremble before him, all the earth!”

May the overwhelming holiness of God strengthen you against the darkness of the world. Trembling before the Lord, may you have courage to stand against temptation and wickedness, doubt and despair. May the greatness of your God fill your heart, and give you a passion for the glory of His Name.
