“Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name” (Psalm 86:11, ESV). In his plea for God’s deliverance, David is confident in the character of his Redeemer, and seeks to return faithfulness to the Faithful One. Verse 11, then, reflects the desire for ever greater devotion to God. The image of a path marked out by the Lord, loyally walked, pictures this desire. The petition rendered “unite my heart” may at first be confusing, but it gives voice to a desire for wholehearted regard for God, expressed in following Him.
God is strong, and able to make us strong. Our faith comes from the Faithful One; like David, we should call upon the Lord in our desire for devotion to Him. Despite every danger and obstacle we may face, our greatest need is for a loyal walk with God. He is able and gracious to set us on the right road when we call upon His name, and to draw us ever nearer to Himself.
