When He Comes
“Bow your heavens, O LORD, and come down! Touch the mountains so that they smoke! Flash forth the lightning and scatter them; send out your arrows and rout them!” (Psalm 144:5-6, ESV).
David’s call for God’s deliverance comes with enthusiastic drama. God is high and exalted above all; for Him to save is to reach down, and His power is gloriously abundant for the salvation of those who trust in Him. The language of God descending on the mountains with smoke reminds us of God’s meeting Israel at Mt. Sinai (Exod. 19:18), and thus of the covenant between God and His people, when He called them to be His own.
In faith, we fervently expect God’s mighty victory in His chosen time. None of the terrors of this world will stand, none of the tyrants will endure. We persevere in the face of evil because we know it is temporary; God will act, and His timing is based in His wisdom and love. When God puts an end to the evil of this fallen world, all shall be glory and peace for His people forever.
