“Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land” (Psalm 85:9, ESV). In this psalm of salvation, the grace of God is the center, but human obedience is subtly brought into the picture. Verse 8 reflected on the gracious deliverance of God, with the addendum that the redeemed should pursue God’s ways. Verse 9 comes at this from the other direction, extolling the biblical theme of the fear of the Lord—wisdom’s beginning, devotion’s pulse. Those who rightly fear the Lord draw near to the Lord, and find His deliverance.
Seek the Lord, and walk upright through this world. Those who fear God need fear nothing else. May the Lord God Almighty give us faith to walk reverently before Him, and courageously in the face of the world.
