“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law” (Psalm 119:18, ESV).
The 119th psalm rejoices in the goodness of God’s instruction. Verse 18 is one of the petitions, asking God for insight to understand His word. But look at how the request is put: “Open my eyes,” which lays the difficulty not with God’s command but with our understanding; “wondrous things,” which shows an expectation of delight and the sheer goodness of God’s ways.
We need this same attitude towards God’s instruction—the Holy Bible. When it is hard to understand the message, may we humble ourselves before the Author and pray for the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit to open our eyes. And may we delight in what we find, not balking at the difficulty of some biblical teaching, but rejoicing that our good God has given His good Word so that we may know Him, and walk with Him each day.
